Diastasis Recti – Lose Your Baby Belly

Isa Herrera Featured in Parents Magazine Diastasis Recti Separation Treatment Parents Magazine A great new article was recently published in Parents Magazine in their Aug 2015 edition. It is a very well written article on the subject of Diastasis Recti separation, and I wanted to take a moment to share it with you. Kudos to Anne Machalinski for her great story and for interviewing me on this topic which is so near and dear to my heart.

Like many others I have a certain obsession with core training. As a pelvic floor Physical Therapist I know that having a strong mid-section without a Diastasis Recti (DRA) separation is just as important as having strong pelvic floor muscles (PFM).

Many women and men start doing traditional crunches without checking to see if their abdominals are separated. Traditional crunches can not only create a DRA, but worsen a pre-existing DRA and cause further problems. This separation decreases the support that the core is supposed to offer and can lead to leaking of urine, sexual dysfunction, prolapsed organs, low back pain, and pelvic pressure.

Many women seek programs that focus on training the core and shedding extra pounds put on from pregnancy. But the reality is that many of these programs are creating destructive forces on the abdominal and pelvic region. It is important to heal this region and stabilize before you can start to build the strength and power that many women desire.

DRA is not something that just affects women. But can be present in men as well. Many men love to work their core and are always focusing on getting more power with traditional crunches. These exercises are outdated can be causing more harm than good and can be a source of male pelvic pain symptoms. At Renew Physical Therapy we stress the importance of intelligent core training and create a program that is most beneficial to our clients. Traditional core training should not approached as a “one size fit all” but should really be tailored to specifically to your body.

I can go on, and on about this topic because it affects so many men and women. I was recently interviewed for Parents Magazine by Anne Machalinski on this topic. Her article was just published in the August edition and is truly enlightening, and a MUST read. I have a link to Parents Article here —— I hope you enjoy it and learn a lot.
